SCOOLPTURES / White Sickness (Leo Records)
Un deuxième album chez Leo pour ce quatuor italien d’improvisation libre. Beaucoup de place aux électroniques dans ce groupe qui propose une improvisation tellement non idiomatique qu’elle se détache de l’impro...non idiomatique.
A second album on Leo for this Italian free improvisation quartet. Lots of rooms for electronics. This group pushes a form of free improvisation so non idiomatic it steps away from…non idiomatic free improvisation.
RON CAINES & GUS GARSIDE / Tilt (Tilt)
Un set intimiste entre le saxophoniste Ron Caines et le contrebassiste Gus Garside. Plusieurs duos improvisés, une ou deux compositions, deux ou trois pièces en solo. De l’improvisation libre à l’européenne avec un brin de jazz créatif à l’américaine. Au saxo soprano, Caines adopte un son qui le rapproche beaucoup de Lol Coxhill. Quant à Garside, son jeu penche entre la rondeur de William Parker et l’intensité d’un Barry Guy. Pourtant, il s’agit d’une séance assez moyenne, avec des moments convenus qui tempèrent les passages plus inspirés (comme la finale de “Librecœur”, magnifique.
An intimate set between saxman Ron Caines and doublebassist Gus Garside. Several improvised duos, one or two compositions, two or three solos. European free improvisation with a dash of American-style creative jazz. On soprano sax, Caines’ tone is strongly reminiscent of Lol Coxhill. As for Garside, his playing falls somewhere between William Parker’s roundness and Barry Guy’s intensity. However, this is a barely average session, with predictable moments marring the more inspired passages (one of them the finale of “Librecœur”).
OPRACHINA / Oprachina (Slam Productions)
Un quatuor de jazz italien composé du guitariste Massimo Bognetti, du saxo ténor Errico de Fabritiis, du bassiste Fabio Fochesato et du batteur Adriano Galinari. Élégant et léché, avec une fibre ECM intégrée au son jazz créatif italien. “Fat Fast” bouge beaucoup, “My Waltz” rappelle presque Ben Monder dans sa langueur. Un peu “straight” à mon goût, mais très joli.
An Italian jazz quartet consisting of guitarist Massimo Bognetti, tenor saxman Errico de Fabritiis, bassist Fabio Fochesato and drummer Adriano Galinari. Elegant and sleek, with an ECM vibe integrated to a more typical Italian creative jazz sound. “Fat Fast” moves well, “My Waltz” brings to mind Ben Monder’s languor. A little straight for my own tastes, but very nice nonetheless.
SUNNA GUNNLAUGS / The Dream (Sunny Sky Records)
Le batteur islandais Scott McLemore entendu hier dans l’ASA Trio m’avait envoyé aussi ce disque, un quatuor du pianiste Sunna Gunnlaugs avec le saxo alto Loren Stillman, le bassiste Eivind Opsvik et McLemore. Gunnlaugs a un style coulant avec des pointes vives. Ses compositions sont plutôt joyeuses, complexes, avec un swing fluide et moderne. Elles rayonnent d’une belle joie de vivre sans tomber dans l’insouciance. Comme compositeur, il me fait beaucoup penser au clarinettiste James Falzone. Un disque de jazz très agréable.
Icelandic drummer Scott McLemore heard yesterday with ASA Trio also sent me this CD, a quartet led by pianist Sunna Gunnlaugs and featuring alto sax Loren Stillman, bassist Eivind Opsvik and McLemore. Gunnlaugs’ style is flowing with vivid peaks. His compositions are rather cheerful, complex, with a fluid modern swing to them. They convey joie de vivre without getting careless. As a composer, Gunnlaugs sounds a lot like James Falzone, at least to my ears. A highly enjoyable jazz record.
MAGNUSON / Crash of Cassini (ind. - merci à XO Publicity)
Un duo homme-femme présentant une particularité: tous deux jouent de la guitare et de la batterie, alternant leurs rôles d’une chanson à l’autre. Tous deux chantent aussi, mais pas particulièrement bien. Crash of Cassini mélange rock progressif pesant (Porcupine Tree, Meshuggah) et rock alternatif. Le résultat déroute quelque peu. L’influence de PTree est si palpable sur “Dark Reality” qu’on croyait à un pastiche, alors qu’ailleurs on tombe dans un rock indie beaucoup plus “vanille”. Belle énergie, mais la production fait trop démo et les mélodies manquent d’attrait.
A man/woman duo with a twist: both play guitars and drums, and they switch places frequently. Both also sing, albeit not particularly well. Crash of Casasino blends weighty prog rock (think Porcupine Tree and Meshuggah) with alt rock. The results are slightly disorienting. PTree’s influence is palpable on the near-pastiche “Dark Reality,” while elsewher eMagnuson sound more like a vanilla indie rock band. Nice energy, but the production is too demo-grade and the melodies fall short.
