Robert Dick: un grand flûtiste; Thomas Buckner: un vocaliste d’un indéniable talent. Ensemble dans un duo d’improvisation? Oui, ça marche très bien. Très très bien même. Comme improvisateur, Buckner n’attire pas l’attention - il se fait discret, posé, déballant doucement ses techniques étendues. Cette réserve convient parfaitement au style un peu plus fougeux (mais à peine) de Dick. Un disque assez court mais sans longueurs, bien senti, convaincant.
Robert Dick: a great flutist; Thomas Buckner: a vocalist of undeniable talent. Together in a free improvisation duo? Yes, it works out very well. As an improviser, Buckner doesn’t draw attention – he sings discreetly, poised, slowly unveiling his extended techniques. This reserve fits perfectly with Dick’s slightly more lively stype. A record rather short but packed, honest, and convincing.
On entend trop peu la violoniste Mari Kimura, mais The World Below G and Beyond constitue une bonne séance de rattrappage. La dame y présente un programme complet de solos, surtout pour violon relié à un ordinateur. Elle y développe les sous-harmoniques qui font sa marque de commerce, dans des œuvres vives et dansantes, virtuoses aussi. La dernière pièce utilise la voix de Thomas Buckner, à travers l’ordinateur pour sous-harmoniser en chœur (ou presque).
We hear too little from violinist Mari Kimura, but The World Below G and Beyond is a great way to catch up. The lady presents a whole program of solos, mostly for “augmented violin” (violin linked to a computer). She develops the subharmonics that have become her trademark, through lively and dancing virtuoso pieces. The final track uses Thomas Buckner’s voice - through the computer - to subharmonize with the violin.
Avec ce nouveau disque, Al Margolis (If, Bwana) propose cinq œuvres électroacoustiques utilisant des instruments acoustiques: la voix de Lisa Barnard Kelley, un trio à cordes (Trio Scordatura), le trombone de Monique Buzzarté et la flûte de Jacqueline Martelle. Tom Hamilton contribue aussi du synthétiseur. “Ringing the Bell” (avec le trio à cordes) fait dans la superposition de microtonalités. À l’autre extrême, “Death to the 8 Notes” est une reconstruction d’une improvisation en quintette. Entre ces deux pôles, on trouve des musiques qui confondent improvisation, composition par ordinateur, son réel et virtualisé. Peut-être le disque le plus abouti et, somme toute, élégant d’If, Bwana à ce jour.
With this new album, Al Margolis (If, Bwana) presents five electroacoustic works using acoustic instruments: Lisa Barnard Kelley’s voice, a string trio (Trio Scordatura), Monique Buzzarté’s trombone, and Jacqueline Martelle’s flute. Tom Hamilton also contributes synthesizer. “Ringing the Bell” (with the string trio) is overlaying microtonalities. At the other end of the spectrum, “Death to the 8 Notes” is a reconstruction of a quintet improvisation. In-between, we have musics blending improvisation and computer composition - real sounds and virtualized sounds. Perhaps If, Bwana’s most accomplished and overall most elegant record to date.
FRENCH TV / French TV 10: I Forgive You fo All My Unhappiness (Pretentious Dinosaur) Dixième opus pour Mike Sary et son groupe - et leur meilleure galette depuis French TV 6: The Violence of Amateurs. Sérieusement. Un rock progressif complexe et fou, mais pas expérimental. Tout dans les arrangements est minutieusement placé, sans pour autant nuire à la spontanéité des performances. Samla Mammas Manna demeure un point de comparaison valide, mais French TV a son propre son depuis longtemps. “Seven Rusty Nails”, “You Got to Run It Out, Dawson!” et “Mosquito Massacre” ressortent du lot, mais tout est bon ici - et que des instrumentales, et que des compositions originales. Prog à indice d’octane élevé pour amateurs des Manna, de Forever Einstein et de Jono El Grande, entre autres. Mais ce sont les amateurs de French TV qui seront les plus contents! A tenth opus for Mike Sary & co. – and their best one since French TV 6: The Violence of Amateurs. Seriously. Complex and crazy prog rock that doesn’t cross into experimental terrain. Everything in the arrangements is carefully laid out, without hampering the spontaneity of the performances. The Samla Mammas Manna remains a valid comparison, but French TV have had their own sound for a long time. “Seven Rusty Nails,” “You Got to Run It Out, Dawson!”, and “Mosquito Massacre” stand out, but everything’s good here. And the album is all about original instrumentals. High-octane pog rock for fans of the Samlas, Forever Einstein, and Jono El Grande, among others. And French TV fans will be delighted! Il s’agit du chanteur folk néo-zélandais (les Chris Thompson sont légion en musique). Sunbeam propose une réédition très augmentée de son premier long-jeu, éponyme, paru en 1975. De la très bonne folk acidulée - les textes n’ont pas tous bien vieillis, mais les musiques sont solides, particulièrement “Young Lust” et “The River Song”, dont on nous met aussi deux prises alternatives, des “outtakes” et, sur un second disque, rien de moins qu’un survol du reste de la carrière de Thompson, jusqu’à un projet YouTube paru cette année. Une belle voix.
This is New-Zeland folk singer Chris Thompson (lots of guys with this name in music). Sunbeam has released an augmented reissue of his 1975 eponymous LP. Very good acid folk - the lyrics have not all aged well, but the music stands strong, especially “Young Lust” and “The River Song”, of which there are also two alternate takes. And a few outtakes. And, on a second CD, no less than an overview of the man’s career, up to a 2010 YouTube project. And he’s got a fine voice.
